Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) is actively expanding its specialty paper production to meet evolving market demands and enhance its product portfolio. A significant initiative includes the establishment of a state-of-the-art tissue paper plant with a daily capacity of 100 tonnes at its Unit-II facility. This project, estimated at ₹340 crore, is slated for completion by March 2026, with ₹270 crore financed through debt and the remainder from internal accruals. The investment reflects TNPL’s strategic move to tap into the growing tissue paper market, diversifying its offerings beyond traditional segments.
In addition to tissue paper, TNPL is exploring the production of other specialty papers, such as wrapping, gift, and tissue papers. The company has engaged consultants to study market conditions and prepare reports to guide these potential expansions. This proactive approach aims to reduce reliance on imports and cater to domestic demand with high-quality, locally produced specialty papers.
Complementing these initiatives, TNPL has undertaken a Mill Expansion Plan (MEP) at its Mondipatti facility in Tiruchirapalli. Implemented in two phases, the first phase includes the installation of a modern hardwood ECF pulp mill and a chemical recovery boiler, which have commenced trial production. The second phase involves adding a 200,000 tonnes per annum packaging board plant, further strengthening TNPL’s position in the packaging segment.
These strategic expansions align with TNPL’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The company continues to utilize bagasse as a primary raw material, reinforcing its status as a leading eco-friendly paper manufacturer. By broadening its product range to include specialty papers and packaging boards, TNPL is well-positioned to meet diverse customer needs and capitalize on emerging market opportunities.
